In 1991 our company was the first in the world to develop and commercialize lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. In the following 20 years, these products evolved with increasing speed and today are an essential part of mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets.
They have also been adopted in applications requiring greater energy in terms of storage and power, and in 2014, the global market reached approximately 4.5 billion battery cells with sums in excess of 1 trillion yen.

Thanks to technological innovations, the market for primary batteries such as silver oxide and coin-type lithium has been expanding greatly as well. For example, the silver oxide batteries required for wristwatches can now be used for medical purposes as a result of our success in developing the world’s first mercury-free batteries.

The markets and competitive conditions in which these batteries are used are changing day by day at dizzying speeds. While it is certainly not a peaceful business environment, when I think about the advancements to come in the next 20 years I feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to use our original technology to bring about innovation.

As we at Sony Energy Devices Corporation celebrate the company’s 40th year in 2015, our dream is ‘to invent the ultimate worry-free energy devices’. In order to provide our customers with excitement and satisfaction, we are developing worry-free energy devices that are easy to charge, convenient to carry and flexible to design around.
